During my visit to Scotland starting next Wed. I will be bringing my wife's mobile. I have heard we can pick up a SIM card and just plug it in and away we go. Can anyone explain how this works? Cost etc? She is on Virgin mobile network over here. I looked into a roaming Data and call / text plan from them and it was not cheap. Wondering if the SIM card may be the way to go.
Thanks

You can buy a pay as you go card for amounts from £10 upwards. Once its used up you can top it up with credit.

You can buy them pretty much anywhere. Your only issue will be if your phone is locked to your network but at worst you can buy a cheap phone for under£10

Just found out her phone is locked and to get it unlocked is not worth it. Her contract is almost up so she will be getting a more advanced phone soon enough. Maybe buying a cheap talk / text phone is the answer.

Looks like maroons old phone meldrum. Fortunately his daughter has sorted him out with a new-fangled version. Still not sure he can work it tho', took him 3 weeks to get it out if the box.
Sorry maroon, couldn't resist. Your old phone was fine...Really.

I am wondering why you were looking for help from a technophobe, Bobby. Surely a Technophobe would be the person least likely to be able to answer your technical question? By the way, I've got a brand new iPhone 6 and I can't work out how to make the fecking thing ring when I get a phone call!!!! Must have it on mute or something but fecked if I can find out where....
