The golfing world is outraged because Lexi Thompson incurred a 4 stroke penalty for incorrectly replacing her ball after marking it on a green. An eagle-eyed viewer phoned in after watching the highlights and reported it. She had six holes left of her final round when she was told and ended up losing a Major title in a play off. All sorts of people saying its a scandal and what if people phone in about goals being offside etc, would they award the match to the other team, decisions should be left to the referee etc etc.
I'm firmly of the view that if you don't know how to mark your ball correctly then you shouldn't be playing the fecking game and, having watched the video, I think it was either intentional (it wasn't as if her ball was marked for 5 minutes and she forgot she'd marked it to the side) or she had a mental moment. You never Mark your ball to the side so she's got no excuse in my view but I do have some sympathy as, had it been spotted immediately, she would have incurred only a two shot penalty. She got an extra two shot penalty for signing for the wrong score (for an offence that hadn't even been noticed at the time she signed). In the old days she would have been disqualified so, in that respect, she's lucky to be allowed to keep second place but what do you think of this viewer phoning in to report something and the judges acting on it?
I think the referee/judge/Marshall whatever should be left to decide and once the match is over, it's over. If she was deemed to be cheating, she would be deemed PNG by her fellow pros and shunned forever. But then we're happy to see cyclists and athletes stripped of titles for cheating, so why not golfers or footballers or players of any other sport? Justice may have been done in the Thompson case and the sport dealt with it quickly - yet they get slammed for it. Maybe you're damned if you take action and damned if you don't?
