LINKBurnley midfielder Joey Barton has been banned from all football-related activity for 18 months after an FA Association hearing over breaches of betting rules. Barton accepted a misconduct charge in February and requested a personal hearing after he was accused of placing 1,260 bets on football over a span of 10 years. An FA statement read: "Joey Barton has been suspended from football and all football activity for 18-months with immediate effect after he admitted an FA misconduct charge in relation to betting. "It was alleged that between 26 March 2006 and 13 May 2016, he placed 1,260 bets on the result, progress, conduct or any other aspect of, or occurrence in, football matches or competitions in breach of FA Rule E8. "Following the Independent Regulatory Commission hearing, the Burnley midfielder was also fined £30,000 and warned as to his future conduct.

Fuck me, that's a career-ender but it shows the EFA are not a bunch of bluenose sycophants like our useless GFA!
Edit: Does 'football related activity' include tv work, newspaper columns and even blogging/Twatter?

I wouldn't have thought so I assume it means coaching. I don't know what his bets were but if they were in games his club wasn't involved in then I think it is a ridiculous rule. Having said that, he knew the rule and chose to break it,

He posted a list of bets in a paper today and I think 15 of them involved teams he was playing for. Scottish League banned him for ONE match for betting on football games, English FA ban him for 18 months. He's also saying it's not his fault he can't get over his addiction - half the teams, tv football matches and leagues are sponsored by betting firms so it's in his face all the time. There is some merit in this, to be fair, although more as a general gambler's predicament rather than a specific football habit; Barton could have bet on horses or greyhounds or cricket or American football etc, he didn't need to bet on football and he certainly should not have been betting on his own team losing.
