I will start by saying I'm glad he's not dead with the public out pouring in a nation which is still divided on him. He won't be short of offers around the talk shows, sportsman dinners and commentary work I'd guess, along with his dabbling in coaching and possibly agent work he defiantly won't go hungry and in fact as the playing door closes another door will bound to be opened to him.
But I can say honestly I've followed his career as a player from when he broke into the men's game to the where he is now and there have been lows and some major highs along the the way, it was a privilege to watch him play to the level he did in an era of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic.
He is without doubt one of the greatest ever Sportsmen to come out of Scotland, this will be debated but my personal list of truly world class sportsmen during my 49 years who I've loved to watch include
Kenny Dalglish Jockey Wilson, Gary Anderdson Stephen Hendry Colin Montgomery, Sandy Lyle Chris Hoy Alex Marshall, Paul Foster David Coulthard Jamie Murray Any Scottish Hibs player especially David Gray, Darren McGregor, Paul Hanlon, Lewis Stevenson, Dylan McGeouch, Fraser Fyfie, John McGinn, James Keatings, Jason Cummings and Liam Henderson
But to me Andy Murray tops the lot and will be missed by tennis, and by me.
That list might have missed a few but those were the ones at the top I enjoyed supporting

How you can have any of those ahead of Cormack, Quinn, Marinello, Browwnlee, Stanton is a mystery to me.
I do agree though Murray is probably the best ever Scots Sportsman.

The Hibs one was a bit fun with the Scottish Cup winning legends, as good as the ones you mentioned are not many would reach the elite of their own sport like Dalglish or Law for example. But I did state any Scottish player that played for us

Law and Dalgleish are probably the only Scotsmen I'd include from football. Mackay and Jinky may have a shout as well.

Andy Murray is the fittest Scottish sportsman ever* (takes supreme effort to get to world No 1 at tennis) but not, in my mind, the best - or one that I would ever stay in to watch on telly. Only ones on that list that I would stay in to watch would be the golfers (Ryder Cup or Major Championship) and the footballers (World Cup or European Cup Final back in the day) and, in the crucible, a Stephen Hendry final when snooker was hugely popular.
*Cyclists need to be fit but they are assisted by superbikes, superskins and superdrugs.

Not sure about that K19, by the same token golfers are assisted by improved equipment and courses. How many of our golfers have achieved sustained greatness. Sandy Lyle and ahhhhhh Sandy Lyle.

Outstanding effort today to play through the pain barrier and come back from being 2 sets down. Ultimately lost but all the same.

Sir Chris Hoy for me. If he'd been English the number of medals he won would have made him a saint but I feel his achievements have been sadly overlooked. He was also a top level rower and above average in many other sports too.

I'm not trying to compare Sandy Lyle with Andy Murray, although I know which one I would stay in to watch if he was in contention for a trophy. And I am certainly not denying the fact that getting to World Number 1 in men's tennis is probably THE toughest achievement in sport, especially doing so when he was probably the fourth best player in his era. In that respect he deserves all the credit going (except a knighthood which should never be given to a young athlete still active in his sport). I think it was BJK who said his best years are ahead of him and I hope that's the case: training kids, being active in the management of the sport, running a sports foundation or whatever. He should earn his knighthood retrospectively. Like Kenny Dalglish...

Aye Iβd agree re the knighthood, but one thing Murray will do will be his legacy as best he can in the things you mention above in bringing through more youngsters in various sports fields and giving whatever experience he can, or management help. Saying that I see one of the Bryan bros had had a hip op and has started playing and believes this could be a route for Andy to prolong his career if he chooses either that or itβs one final bow at Wimbledon.
