Why do the match officials let them go the distance before stepping in and what’s the punishment for this. It’s considered part of the game. It supposedly stops players from dirty play. If you make a dirty hit (knee on knee or boarding from behind etc) you will have to drop the gloves and fight a tough guy on the other team. It protects the skillful players from goons. The great Wayne Gretzky always had a good fighter, team mate, on the ice with him for protection. The linesmen usually wait until they tire ( it doesn’t take long ) before breaking it up. Punishment is 5 minute penalty.

Some times if the lino’s are quick enough they step in and tie them up before they really get going. The other reason they wait is the lino’s can get injured by taking a punch so as Canjam says they let them duke it out until their arms feel like telephone poles then separate them. Punishment is normally 5 each for fighting but depending what precipitated it there can be an extra 2 mins for instigating ( goading the other guy into a fight) or 5 mins for a more serious call such as boarding or kneeing ( probably committed against another oppo player which would then induce the fight ). That particular fight lasted around 1.04 sec. That is quite long. Normally they would be over in half that time sometimes quicker depending on who gets their big licks in first. Rarely see anyone get severely injured from fighting. Usually cuts and bruises and pride damaged most. It is a part of the game that I like. Sadly it is becoming less of a factor nowadays but still required every now and then. At they end of a tilt like that between two heavy weights you might even see them chatting to each other on the penalty bench congratulating each other on a job well done. They each know their role and appreciate that it is a tough one to do.
