Don't think now in the EPL the size of stadium and support is that important Dolf. If you are in that League and do relatively well, as they are doing, the vast amount of money on offer is the most important thing and therefore the quality of player you can attract. St Johnstones income would stay relatively low whether they were doing well in the League and won 2 cups in one season! ( I've just looked at Bournemouths transfer record this season and they have so far spent around 130 million with only 2 million being taken back in for player departures. Add the wage bill on top and one can begin to see the amount of money on offer to clubs even though they have a small infrastructure)
Problem with the EPL it's a big ledge to fall off financially when things go against you and a club the size of Bournemouth may well struggle to recover once the relegation parachute payment has been spent.
You are quite correct with the type of player Hibs would be offered. Clubs get these untried youngsters and fans are always hoping a gem is uncovered..........but in my experience very rarely do. I think I read Hibs are getting an untried defender from Leeds ?
I just think it makes Scottish football look even more tin pot, when the tinniest pot in the EPL has one of our biggest teams (top 5 really) as a feeder, not just a rung below, but below 2 others in a wierd pyramid.
In terms of youngsters, they will hoover up dozens of them as a risk worth taking, lob them up to Edinburgh, or Aukland, and see if they are any good. If not, who cares, move on. That cant be good for Hibs long term. The only thing that might help if that they may well want them in at least a competitive team, but there is no incentive to build a winning team. Would they spend money on bringing Boyle back? Would they take Fish from Man U to shore up the defence? Woudl they pay good money for Marshall? Or do they just send up a load of kids and see how they get on, maybe throw in a few journeymen to give them a bit of backbone.
It may work out, but I cant really see the upside for Hibs here.
Lots of valid points Dolf, the biggest carrot I see is that Hibs out of their portfolio are the only realistic chance of getting European football year in, year out so players like Fish who could have a future could be keen to develop here. As you say does that benefit us or not?
