Tonight the game is over and there is still a complete period left to play. As I said in my last brief the Sharks had all the pressure on them and they responded like a team that did make it to the Stanley Cup final series last year. Scored 15 seconds into the first period and they have not let up since. They have played a tremendous pressure game and have forced the Oilers into major penalty trouble. Up until tonight the Sharks powerplay had been cold with only one goal on umpteen opportunities but tonight they have scored at will on the powerplay. Score is 6-0 after 2 periods. I think I may go to bed as there is no suspense left in this game. That being said it is only 1 game in a potential 7 game series and there are lots of instances in the past where a team has gotten gubbed one night then came back next game and won. Roll on Thursday night in Edmonton for a crack to remedy the performance tonight.
Edit: Well. Being the true fan that I am I did stay up and watch the third period. Not much more damage done 7-0 final. Message sent and received. Time now to circle the wagons for Thursday night.

Was in San Jose k19. Oilers still looking good as we have home ice advantage should it go to a seventh and deciding game. Note: In recent years past the Sharks have pumped 7 past 3 other teams during the playoffs and still ended up losing all of those series. Nae worries. It was only one game. These hockey players are a mentally tough bunch. Not too often they get intimidated by losing big. They just get back to practice and make the adjustments required to move forward.

I take it, it isn't an aggregate score

Hell no! You can lose 50-0 or 1-0. Just counts as a loss. First team to 4 wins, wins the series and moves on to the next round where you start over against the next opponent. That is why losing by a big score means nothing in the overall scheme of things. Just forget it and move on.

Well! Game 5 tied at 3 going to sudden death overtime!!! Yikes!! Oilers came out of the blocks fast and by the 10 min mark were up 1-0 and had hit the post 3 times. A little bit of luck and this one could have been over really early. Credit to the Sharks as they worked their way ack into it after the initial Oiler surge and had 2-1 lead after 1 period. Second period saw the aoilers pull one goal back to set up the third period comeback. Both goalies in this series have been outstanding. The Oilers finally tied it at about the 17.5 minute mark of the third with Oscar Klefbom blasting a slapshot that was clocked at 100.5 miles per hour. Goalie had no chance . So it is now 11.18 PM and the first of what could be 2 or 3 overtimes is about to start. Of course it could be over in a couple of minutes too. This is why I do not like these games that start at 8.30 PM. If it goes to overtime it makes for a long day tomorrow. Win or lose this series, for the Oilers it was always about getting into the playoffs and maybe causing an upset in the first round but if not at least making it a learning experience for what is a really young team. That part has been achieved. The team will grow from this experience and compete better in future years. Now. Time to get back to the game and hope we win it!!
Edit: Game over!!. Oilers win it 4-3 in o/t. It was close to being a full 20 mins but they managed to finally get one in close to the end of the period. Totally dominated the overtime. At least 90% of the period was spent in San Jose end of the ice. Constant pressure. Outshot the Sharks 14-2 just in overtime and if not for the goalie it would have been over early. He was unbelievable.
Maybe the young legs won out over the old boys from San Jose tonight as the Oilers certainly out skated them. Back to San Jose for game 6 on Saturday night. Go Oilers go!!

Exciting stuff with huge attendances and tv revenues and uncertainty about which team ends up winning. I wonder how it would be if we had play-offs for the Championship in UK Football (sigh).

Ah I forgot they name the away team first in Americaland/Candaland sports. Ok so 7-0 away isn't so bad Anyway, what the feck has happened - is it best of 7 or best of 6 with overtime or what? Same for the Leafs - updates please (even if your team gets knocked out, it's still sounds more exciting than following scottish football)

It really is all about the money k19. But the on ice product merits the format....unlike the SPFL. The players do not get paid anything during the playoffs until they are eliminated. There is a giant pool of money divvied up and depending on what stage you are eliminated determines how much the team gets to split up between the players. In most instancecs the higher paid players make a lot less money for the gruelling playoff schedule than they do during the regular season. But they do not care as long as they get their name engraved on the Holy Grail. No idea how much revenue the Oilers have generated per game but I looked into getting some tickets for the playoffs for my son and I and the cheapest tickets available that were way up high in the nose bleed sections were $350 each. Hate to think what ice level cost. My guess is at least $1000 or more. With 19,000 attending , you do the math.

Always best of 7.Every game comes to a conclusion no matter how long they have to play. I have seen games (rarely though) go 2 or 3 overtime periods until a "Golden goal" is scored. Edge of your seat stuff at times. I think I said at one time on the ol New 606 if I had the chance to attend a seventh game of the Stanley Cup final or the Sottish Cup Final there is no contest. Lord Stanley's mug wins every time. Another thing to think about . Last night the Oilers had a game total of about 48 shots on net. Not near misses or goal posts. Shots that would have gone in if the goalie had not saved them. Hearts would be lucky to get that many in a whole season this year. Just think about that for a minute!

Big night in San Jose tonight!! I fully expect the Sharks to come out guns ablazing for the first 10 mins again and thrive off the home crowd energy. The Oil are going to have to weather the storm which has proven difficult so far. If they can get through the first period tied or within a goal then the game will settle down a bit and they could get back into it and sneak the win and get into round 2. If they lose then back we come to Edmonton for game 7 on Monday with the home ice advantage shifting to the Oil. Would rather they won it tonight as Monday will be a pressure cooker atmosphere that none of the young Oilers will have faced before. The Sharks on the other hand are a very experienced team and have lots of guy's that have been exposed to the intensity of game 7's. Most of their top players are in early , middle and late 30's. It surely is the last kick at the cat (sorry HFC!) for some of them before a rebuild soon. I can feel the tension building already and there are 12 hrs before face off! I will be a basket case by then ffs!

Exciting stuff with huge attendances and tv revenues and uncertainty about which team ends up winning. I wonder how it would be if we had play-offs for the Championship in UK Football (sigh). That might work better in England k19 where the revenue between teams gulf is not so huge. It works well here inpart because there are salary caps etc to even the playing field and it helps make the teams more competitive with each other. I mean going into the playoffs there were 16 teams and really it is just a case of which team gets hot at the right time. Plus you need your goalie to absolutely play out of his skin. Case in point. Chicago. A perennial contender for the last number of years. Gone in round 1 in 4 games straight ot Nashville. Nobody saw that one coming. Most of the series have been fairly close which is what you want and need to create interest and excitement. Unfortunately we all know that would fly in the face of the ethos of the SPFL and the uglies who live to try and anihalate every other team.

At the prices you mention though BB does it not mean that the game is out of reach of ordinary people. I take on board the positives but surely pricing is a big negative.
